Trachyphyllia Brain Corals
Trachyphyllia are large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their fleshy tissue, distinctive folded appearance, and intense coloration. Often called open brain corals or simply Trachy corals in the reef aquarium hobby, they can develop striking combinations of green, red, orange, yellow, pink, and other colors. Multicolor specimens are frequently sold as rainbow Trachyphyllia.
Because each Trachyphyllia can have a different pattern and combination of colors, individually photographed specimens make it easier to choose the exact appearance you want for your reef aquarium.
Trachyphyllia and Wellsophyllia Corals
The name Wellsophyllia is still commonly encountered in the aquarium hobby, particularly for rounder, heavily folded open brain corals. Wellsophyllia was historically treated as a separate genus, but corals formerly identified as Wellsophyllia are now generally classified within Trachyphyllia. You may therefore still see the names Wellsophyllia, Wellso coral, and Trachyphyllia used for similar corals in the reef aquarium trade.
Lucky Corals includes former Wellsophyllia-type corals in this Trachyphyllia collection so shoppers can find these corals regardless of which hobby name they are familiar with.
Rainbow Trachyphyllia and Other Colors
Some of the most sought-after Trachyphyllia are rainbow specimens displaying several contrasting colors across the same coral. Other Trachyphyllia may be dominated by brilliant reds, greens, oranges, or other fluorescent colors. Their large fleshy polyps and bright coloration can make them an impressive centerpiece on the sand bed of a reef aquarium.
Trachyphyllia Coral Care
Trachyphyllia are generally best placed on the sand bed or another smooth surface where their fleshy tissue is less likely to be damaged by sharp rock. They typically prefer lower to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water movement. Strong direct flow can prevent the coral from fully expanding and may irritate its fleshy tissue.
Trachyphyllia receive much of their energy from photosynthesis but can also benefit from occasional feeding. Small meaty foods or appropriately sized coral foods can be offered when the coral's feeding tentacles are extended. As with other LPS corals, stable reef aquarium water chemistry and adequate spacing from neighboring corals are important for long-term health.
