Branching Frogspawn Corals
Many frogspawn corals available in the reef aquarium hobby have a branching growth structure, with individual coral heads growing from separate branches of skeleton.
As a healthy branching frogspawn grows, its heads can divide and gradually develop into a larger colony. This growth form also makes branching frogspawn relatively easy to propagate because individual branches can be separated without cutting through the fleshy tissue of neighboring heads.
A small frogspawn frag can become a substantial colony over time, so it's a good idea to consider its eventual size when choosing a permanent location in your aquarium.
Frogspawn Coral Care
Frogspawn corals are generally considered moderately easy LPS corals to keep when provided with stable aquarium conditions. Moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow provide a good starting point for most specimens.
The coral's tentacles should gently sway rather than being continuously pushed hard in one direction. Excessively strong direct flow can prevent the coral from fully expanding and may damage its fleshy tissue.
Frogspawn corals are photosynthetic and obtain much of their energy from light, so direct feeding isn't required. They may capture small foods from the water column, but maintaining stable water chemistry is generally more important than frequent target feeding.
As stony corals, frogspawn use calcium and alkalinity to build their skeletons. Maintaining stable alkalinity, calcium, salinity and temperature helps support healthy growth.
Frogspawn Coral Placement and Compatibility
Give frogspawn corals enough room to fully expand without constantly touching neighboring corals. Their tentacles can extend considerably beyond their skeleton, and frogspawn can sting nearby corals when they come into contact.
A location with moderate light, gentle indirect flow and adequate surrounding space is usually a good starting point. Avoid placing a new frogspawn where strong flow blows its tentacles directly against rockwork or another coral.
Frogspawn can develop into large, flowing colonies as additional heads grow, so providing extra room from the beginning can reduce the need to move the coral later.
Frogspawn vs. Hammer Corals
Frogspawn and hammer corals are closely related LPS corals (Both are members of the Genus Fimbriaphyllia) with similar general care requirements, but they can usually be distinguished by the shape of their tentacle tips.
Frogspawn typically develops clustered or branching tips that give the coral its characteristic egg spawn-like appearance, while hammer corals generally have broader hammer, anchor or T-shaped tips.
Both can provide substantial movement and color in a reef aquarium, making them popular choices for aquarists making them favorite choices.
