Zoanthids, commonly called zoas, are colorful soft corals prized for their incredible variety of colors and patterns. Zoa Coral Colors and Varieties

One of the biggest attractions of zoanthids is their incredible variety of bright colors and patterns. Named varieties help reefkeepers identify and collect particular color patterns. Some aquarists build entire zoa gardens containing multiple varieties that eventually grow a continuous colorful feature in the reef tank.

Appearance can vary with aquarium conditions, particularly lighting intensity and spectrum. Even genetically identical zoanthids can develop different coloration and polyp characteristics under different conditions.

Zoanthid Care

Zoanthids are popular with both beginning and experienced reefkeepers because the vast majority of varieties are hardy and adaptable. In general, 40–150 PAR and low water flow provide a good starting point.

Provide enough flow to prevent detritus from collecting between polyps without subjecting colonies to excessive direct flow. Newly introduced zoanthids should be acclimated gradually to brighter lighting, particularly above 100 PAR.

Zoanthids obtain much of their energy through photosynthesis and generally do not require target feeding. Stable temperature, salinity, and alkalinity are important, while maintaining measurable nitrate and phosphate can support healthy coloration and growth.

Unlike stony corals, zoanthids do not build calcium carbonate skeletons, although maintaining stable reef aquarium chemistry remains beneficial.

Zoa Placement and Growth

Zoanthids grow by extending tissue across nearby surfaces and producing new polyps. Growth rates vary considerably among varieties, with some spreading rapidly while others develop slowly.

Many reefkeepers combine several varieties to create colorful zoa gardens. When planning a garden, consider each variety's growth rate and the space available for expansion.

Fast-growing zoanthids are best placed on isolated rock islands rather than the main rockwork, where they can spread aggressively and overtake neighboring corals.

Handling Zoanthids Safely

Some zoanthids and closely related corals contain palytoxin, a potentially dangerous toxin. Wear protective gloves and eye protection when handling or fragging colonies. Keep loose fragments away from children and pets, and never expose zoanthid-covered rocks to boiling water or steam.

When purchasing zoanthids, consider coloration, polyp count, growth rate, and placement. Smaller frags offer an affordable way to collect new varieties, while larger multi-polyp frags and colonies provide more immediate visual impact.
