Acan Corals – Colorful Micromussa for Reef Aquariums

Acan corals are popular LPS corals known for their large, fleshy polyps and impressive variety of colors and patterns. Individual colonies can display combinations of red, orange, green, blue, purple and yellow, with rainbow Acans among the most colorful varieties available.

Acan or Micromussa?

The name Acan coral remains widely used in the reef aquarium hobby, although many corals historically sold as Acan Lords or Acanthastrea lordhowensis are now classified as Micromussa lordhowensis. Because both names remain common among reef keepers, you may see these corals referred to as Acans, Acan Lords, Micromussa or Micromussa Lords.

Acan Coral Care

Acans generally do well with low to moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow. Excessively strong flow can prevent their fleshy polyps from fully expanding, while appropriate gentle flow helps keep debris from settling on the colony.

Acans can obtain much of their energy from their symbiotic algae, but they can also capture food with their individual polyps. Occasional feeding with appropriately sized meaty foods can supplement their nutrition.

When placing an Acan, leave some room between it and neighboring corals. Acans don't produce sweeper tentacles and often lose battles with neighboring corals.

Choosing an Acan Coral

One of the attractions of Acans is that no two color patterns are exactly alike. Some have strongly contrasting centers and outer rings, while others develop multicolor or rainbow patterns across each polyp. When shopping for an Acan, consider both the individual polyp coloration and how the pattern appears across the entire colony. Many Rainbow Acan corals lose their rainbow colors in captivity and shift to reddish orange, especially when placed in higher light.
