Euphyllia corals are among the most popular LPS Corals kept in reef aquariums. They are prized for their large, fleshy polyps, brilliant coloration and flowing movement.

The group is commonly associated in the aquarium hobby with Torch Corals, Hammer Corals, Frogspawn Corals and Octospawn Corals. These corals are available in a wide range of green, gold, orange, yellow, blue and multicolor varieties.

Types of Euphyllia Corals

Torch Corals are known for their long individual tentacles and flowing appearance. Color varieties range from green and gold torches to highly sought-after multicolor varieties.

Hammer Corals have distinctive hammer- or anchor-shaped tentacle tips and are available in both branching and wall growth forms.

Frogspawn & Octospawn Corals have closely related appearances characterized by branching, multi-tipped polyps that create a full, flowing look. Their similar appearance makes them natural corals to compare when choosing a Euphyllia-style coral for your reef.

While reef hobbyists commonly use the name Euphyllia to group Torch, Hammer, Frogspawn and Octospawn corals, modern scientific classification places Hammer, Frogspawn and related corals in the genus Fimbriaphyllia, while Torch Corals remain in the genus Euphyllia. The traditional Euphyllia name remains widely used in the aquarium hobby.

Euphyllia Coral Care

Euphyllia generally prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate water movement. Flow should be sufficient to gently move the polyps without continuously forcing the coral's tissue against its skeleton.

Because Euphyllia can extend sweeper tentacles and sting neighboring corals, provide adequate space between colonies. Maintaining stable calcium, alkalinity and magnesium levels also supports healthy skeletal growth.
